Court Policies

To ensure that your visit to the 31st District Court is as smooth as possible, please familiarize yourself with the following Court policies prior to arriving for your court date.

SUBJECT TO SEARCH: All persons entering the courthouse are subject to search. We reserve the right to inspect all packages, bags, etc. Weapons (or items that could be used as a weapon) are strictly forbidden.

ELECTRONIC DEVICES: Electronic devices (cell phones, tablets, laptops, pagers, etc) are not permitted in the courtroom and should be left in your vehicle. This policy applies to all persons checking through the security screening station. If you check-in for court and have an electronic device in your possession, you will be required to return it to your vehicle before entering the courtroom. If an electronic device is necessary for your case, you must fill out a request form at the clerk’s window.

FOOD & DRINK PROHIBITED: Food and drink is prohibited in the courthouse. You will be required to dispose of any food or drink items before entering the courthouse.

PROPER ATTIRE: Proper attire is required for all persons entering the courtroom. The following articles of clothing are impermissible: Shorts, swimsuits, cutoffs, hats (aside from religious apparel), miniskirts, tube or halter tops, revealing clothing of any kind, baggy pants exposing undergarments, flip-flop sandals and shower shoes.

PUNCTUALITY: You must appear on time for your court date. If you fail to appear at your scheduled time, you may be subject to penalties or sanctions, or your case may be dismissed.

FINES & COSTS ARE DUE ON YOUR COURT DATE: Fines and costs are due on the date they are assessed (see MCR 1.110). If you are appearing for a court date, please be prepared to pay potential fines and costs.

PAYMENTS: The 31st District Court accepts cash, check, money order, Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express. There is an additional service fee for using a credit card. Bond payments must be cash, money order or cashier’s check.
